Signature Elements of Mid-Century Architecture

Mid-Century is a term used to describe the design style that brought forth major changes in modern design, architecture and urban development between 1933 and 1965.

This style emphasized creating structures with ample windows and open floor plans, with the intention of opening up interior spaces and bringing the outdoors in. Many Mid-century houses utilized groundbreaking post and beam architectural design of the time that eliminated bulky support walls in favor of walls seemingly made of glass. Function was as important as form in Mid-Century designs.

Key Elements of Mid-Century Modern in Architecture:

This design has flat planes and the geometric lines of the house are irregular and rigorous. Mid-Century homes commonly have flat roofs however, most modern ranch-style houses had gable roofs.

The large ceiling to floor windows are prominent. Sliding-glass doors and other expansive panes of glass allow light to enter rooms from multiple angles. Bringing the indoors out, rooms have multiple outdoor views, or multiple access points, encouraging an appreciation of healthy living.

The design tends to have changes in elevation throughout. Such as small steps going up and down between rooms that create split-level spaces. A midcentury modern might have partial walls, or cabinets of varying heights to create different depths in the space.

The Color Palette: The predominate color palette for Mid Century Modern was earth-tones with olive green, pumpkin, mustard and umber popular.  In the 1960s psychedelic colors appeared in fashion.  Soon it was common to see bright accent colors such as turquoise, neon green, yellow and pink included in home decor. The design of wall and floor coverings often have geometric patterns in textiles.
